  1. Hi, I love your channel on youtube, so I decided to check out your website!. I always blow dry my hair when I wash it, which is twice a month. Since I cut all the relax ends off it is hard to tell when i need a trim. When I blow dry my hair the ends are curly, not straight like the rest of the hair. I really don’t want to flatiron my hair to see if it needs a trim. Should i just trim off the curly ends, because they seem dry and never come out straight like the rest of the hair?

    Thanks in advance
    Yonique

  2. If I was you, I wouldn’t worry too much about trimming the ends. You will know when they need to be trimmed believe me. I keep my hair blown out most of the time, and yes my ends still have a little curl. When you notice that your ends are feeling a little crispier than usual, and when you comb or rub your fingers down they start to break or shed, trim. I try to limit my trimming. I do it at least twice a year though…every 6 months. I never want to over do it.
If you are not noticing any excessive rough hair and breakage you should be fine. I usually add a little oil to my ends at night when my hair is blown out to give them a little more shine. I don’t usually try to blow dry my hair extremely straight so I expect a little frizz.
    Hope this helps! 🙂

  3. I haven’t see any breakage, so I won’t be trimming for awhile.

    Thank You,
    This helps a lot

  4. When my hair was in a twa, and my entire first year I only wore wash and gos. I didn’t have a regimen, because I didn’t understand how to care for my hair during that time. I did what was easy. 🙂

  5. Hi, I’m Joanna. Just started out good being natural. I did the big chop Jan.2012. I need your help on how to grow it out long, and heathly like yours. Can you help me with the right products to use, and what all i need to do to see amazing results?

  6. Hi Joanna and congratulations on yourjourney!
There is so much information out there. I suggest keeping it all as simple as possible. It is okay to learn from others, but take only what you need, because I can promise you do not need it all.
As far as products, I have never been big on giving a particular product credit for my hair growth. Products for my journey have been more beneficial during styling.
I give credit to my hair care regimen. I am really consistent and I treat my hair with care.
It’s really about forming a relationship with your hair. Getting to know it’s likes and dislikes. Finding what YOUR hair responds to, because everyone’s experience is so different.

First start with creating a regimen
You can take a look at my current regimen to get an ideal on the things you may need to include.
    My full regimen HERE

Also, I created a few quick tips for people who are getting started with their journey. Some of that info may also help you along the way.
    Go Natural post HERE

I don’t want to overwhelm you with information and dos and don’ts, because the truth is there are no real rules. So many people have had different results doing different things.

I hope some of this guides you along the way!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  7. Moisturizing depends on your hair routine and also porosity. I’ve just recently became interested in porosity and really digging into what it really means. I wish I would have covered this subject earlier, because knowing your porosity can make things so much easier when it comes to adding and sealing in moisture.
If you want to find out your hair’s porosity so that you can create a regimen for moisturizing your hair. You can fill a cup or bowl with water. Pull one strand of hair from your scalp. Make sure the hair has the white bulb. Dip the hair in the water, and then place it on top of the water. Examine how fast or slow it sinks to the bottom. Does it sink to the bottom? If your hair floats that means you have low porosity like me. The cuticles lay really flat and it is harder to get moisture in. It is really to have a routine with hot oil treatments and also washing with warm water, something to open the cuticles so that moisture is able to be absorbed into the hair. If you have high porosity hair, your hair cuticles are open, and the hair soaks up moisture, which keeps the hair extremely dry.
Knowing your porosity will help you pick the best products for your hair, and also decide how often you need to moisturize.
If you want to read more on porosity, I recommend checking this article out that helped me.

Good luck and I hope this helps! 🙂

  8. my name is maryam from Nigeria.. i use to have very long hair till it all started sheddig off about 3yrs ago. i have tried several things to get back the length and body of my hair but nothing seems to work. so i recently came across your page along with other sites that encourage keeping of natural hair. i have not relaxed my hair in the last 3months so am contemplating going natural. the problem is my natural hair is a stubborn afro (been African). please how do i go about growing my natural hair with a bit of easy because my undergrowth is so difficult to manage now as it is..

  9. Hi Maryam! Congrats on your transition to natural hair!
The easiest way to manage my kinky hair is to keep it stretched.
Stretched hair helps to minimize knots, tangles, and make styling so much easier.
You can stretch your hair using the banding method, threading, twist outs, braid outs, bantu knot outs, roller sets.
I prefer to use heat on my hair. I blow dry once a month to keep my hair stretched out, but heat is not for everyone especially during transition.

I hope this helps you a little. 🙂

  10. Hi Alicia…I notice on my journey that the top of my hair is longer than the back. It’s growing out slowly, will it grow out evenly all around and be the same length?

  11. Have you stretched the hair to see if it is really growing out uneven. Sometimes the curl patterns are different and it makes it seem that the hair is growing differently when it really is not. The back of my hair used to grow faster when I first started. The top seem to be slower, it looked like I had a mullet. LOL! I tried to cut it to make it even, but it would just grow back. The longer my hair has gotten it now has a nice shape. 🙂

  12. Hi Alicia, I absolutely love your page, Ive been watching your videos for the last couple of days. I had a few questions. I guess you can say that I am transitioning because ive had a sew in for almost two months which would mean no perm for that long as well. I really want to go all natural. I wanted to know how i should care my transitioning hair, if I don’t know my exact curl pattern?

  13. Thank you very much! 🙂

Your curl pattern is not important, especially at this stage. When you have to different textures during transition, you can use styles to blend the two together. Twist outs, braid outs, bantu knots outs, roller sets. 🙂

  14. Hello Alicia! I just came across your blog and I love it! It inspires me to go natural again I hope one day (soon) my hair will have length like yours. I’m 16 years old and I’m officially going natural again for the 3rd time. I have quite a few questions about transitioning, going natural, and building a regimen and I feel that you can help me out best.

  15. Is your hair still waist length because from ur recent videos of ur straight hair it does not look as long….also ur videos are mostly about ur straight hair will u do videos about ur curly natural hair again soon…??? I miss it lol

  16. Hi! I consider my hair MBL right now. Here is a video from February if you want to see my latest length check…. http://youtu.be/MFmNlN0QTDg
I’ve used heat and blown out my hair monthly for over two years now. Most of my videos are on straightened /blown out hair.
I don’t see myself doing a wash and go anytime soon! LOL! I will wearing two strand twist for a few months. 🙂

  17. lol bahaha i just watched you new video of your wash & go!!!!! thank you.. i love your curly hair soo much… its sooo pretty and i cannot wait until im fully natural.. thanks your such an angel :0

  18. I’m looking at your pictures at about year 1-11/2 and my hair looks a lot like that except I have more of it. I’m trying not to get discouraged, but it seems like all I can achieve is an Afro or twist outs. My wash and go’s always turn out looking like an Afro as well. I can’t seem to get the defined curls I’m hoping for. Right now I’m following the CG method and I’m not sure what I think about it. I have become somewhat of a product junkie, but I just don’t know what works. Help?????

  19. Hello; I’ve been natural for 2.5 years now and my hair is maybe shoulder length. I’ve just recently learned that I have low porosity hair which makes sense and could be the reason that my hair seems to be stuck in this length. It doesn’t seem to be growing as a matter of fact it seems as though I’m losing hair! It doesn’t seem to matter if I trim my hair or not, it always shed!!! – Wash n Go’s are not good for me, so I stick to two strand twists. I’ve just recently decided to get it braided to possibly give my hair (and myself) a break until I figure out how to properly maintain it. Any suggestions on how to work with lo po hair? P.S. Love your website and your hair!

  20. Hi! I’m 16 and I am fully natural. When I was transitioning my braid outs came out sooo nice, but now they either aren’t defined, dry or limp. Any help?

  21. I usually get my best results on a braid out that was done on wet hair.
I make sure to leave the braids in as long as possible. I also make sure the hair is 100% dry.

Not sure if this is a method you are already trying, but this is how I get a successful braid out. 🙂
If you are not against gel, it also helps with defining braid outs or twist outs. 🙂

  22. Low porosity hair means that the hair cuticles are closed tightly, and it makes it harder for moisture to get in. Products and moisture can sit on top of the hair instead of being absorbed. I always wondered why my hair took 24 hours to completely dry. This is also why my hair started to retain length once I started doing consistent deep conditioning/hot oil treatments. I use heat for my treatments, and heat helps to open the hair cuticles so that it absorbs the moisture and product. It also helps to wash and rinse under warm water. You want to use any method you can to get moisture in and lock it in. Heavy products are great for kinky hair, but with low porosity hair, you don’t want to stack too much on throughout the week. It will just cause build up really fast.

These are just some of my quick tips.

Thank you soooo much for stopping by and good luck! 🙂

  23. Hello! I am just starting my transition from relaxed to natural hair (I’m only about 6wks into it). I was doing some research about natural hair care and stumbled upon your website. I must say your transition story is truly inspiring! Your hair is gorgeous! I tried going natural before about 10 years ago, became frustrated at the process, and went back to relaxing. Now, I am ready to commit to this process and I will definitely return back to your site for the motivation and tips. Thank you!

  24. Hey!! You’re a real inspiration to me going natural. Im 16 and I tried going natural when I was 15 with my best friend (she stuck it out so now she’s all natural). I didn’t get a perm for 11 months then I quit. Still, I had no idea how to care for natural hair so when I took out some tree braids I had over the summer I flipped out because it was so curly and wavy and i couldn’t detangle it to save my life. But now that I’ve seen all these places to go for support and style ideas for transitioners (I’m too scared to just Big Chop) I want to try again and stick to it. I think natural hair is just really pretty and thick, plus it’s strong. At first I wanted to go natural just for long hair, but now I want long, thick, healthy hair. Any tips on how long I should wait till I cut off all the relaxed ends?

  25. I’m transitioning 10 months! My natural hair is so beautiful…and I’m very happy and proud of myself!
I cant wait to do the “BC”…I just didn’t yet because I’ll marry on august…so I need this hair to do some hairstyle…but I can’t wait to cuttttttttttt!!!
Very happy to see other girls like you!
    I really like your blog…
    Kisses from Brazil 🙂
    God bless you girl 😉

  26. I really appreciate yr videos and advice but especially the latest one on yr new journey! I have just started my 1st protective style challenge as of yesterday so your video was right on time! B/c’d 10/2011 and I’m about shoulder length from a twa but it seems like my growth stalled the past couple of months. Suggestions for longer lasting styles besides 2 strand twists? I get bored after a couple weeks. Lol.

  27. Just wanted to let you know how inspired I am by your website. I have done a lot of research into my natural journey, but haven’t gotten close to getting any information as thorough as your website. You are very inspirational and professional. Thanks for keeping hopes up for me and my hair journey. God Bless.

  28. I love ur words of encouragement! It sounds silly but I’ve been transitioning for 2months I’m ready to give up all the time! I haven’t permed for over 6yrs but I’m addicted to the flat iron so that my hair is unbelievably damaged. The growth is going well but I’m not used to being frizzy.

  29. It takes time to adjust to the next texture. Make sure you spend time with your hair. Develop a simple regimen and routine for washing, styling, etc. Find some simple products that work for your hair and stick to those things. Find what styles are easier for you and make your hair look the way you like. Once you master these few things everything else will follow. It’s all about keeping it simple and starting with the basics. 🙂 Good luck on your journey!

  30. my hair is naturallycurly and i permed it on christmas eve of 2013. it finally got back curly june 2nd. it havent got all the way back curly, i havent got my waves in the front, and it fell out a lot… what should i do?

  31. See, Now it makes sense why my hair growth has been stagnant. I have never really trimmed the ends. I know some people are skeptical but I think it actually helps, because the split ends keep breaking the hair and it remians in the same range or little difference is observed in growth. I will try trim my ends every couple of months.
You have beautiful hair btw. God Bless!

  32. I love your channel. I also wear my hair natural but i use protective styles more. braids and twists.
i have never relaxed my hair i just used to cut them every month in high school cause it was a must.
now since june 2012 i started to leave my hair i sometimes get weaves but they are itchy and i don’t know how to manage them.lol
i keep my hair in protective style for like 4 weeks and then i leave them out for 1 week doing bantu knots or twist out before i re-put my box braids.
my hair are naturally curly i have a lot of hair but not very long like my mum or sisters.lol but anyways im just patient and i know they are growing .
i started to use onion juice and garlic oil home made because i heard they are good for hair.
i love your hair its beautiful it doesnt seem kinky are you black like for real?

  33. Simply amazin girl, your hair shows you not only take care of it but love it too!!!!! Thank you for putting this information up there, and for being an inspiration to all us natural and transitioning girls!!!!!
    Smiles!!!

  34. Hey! I have been natural for around 1 year and 5months and I love your channel!
I have looked on so many different youtube videos and blogs and your advice has definitely helped me out the most!
I live in the UK and I struggle to find Afro Caribbean hair products compared to the US and I must admit, I actually thought that’s I needed like 50million and 1 different products to finally get my hair to start growing and stop breaking! After watching all of your videos I have now come to the conclusion it’s probably my regimen which is bad, not the actual products!
I have a busy schedule, so when it comes to doing my hair I feel that I just don’t have time for it and just end up putting it up and walking out the door without actually detangling it!
I know now that Afro hair is actually quite weak, so allowing my hair to get really dry is not helping me whatsoever!
I was wondering if you could help me out with porosity! Whenever I wet my hair, I always get dew drops and it feels like my hair doesn’t actually take it in. Also, the moisturiser I put on my hair after putting water on it stays white for ages and when it dries, I end up getting little white bits in my hair 😦 .. What does this mean?
I have now purchased a hood dryer and with it being a new year, I’ve decided to stop being lazy and start loving and caring for my hair!
Also, how often I should start deep conditioning / hot oil treating my hair. Do they work differently?
    Sorry about thee longest comment!
    Rochelle

  35. I’m in the military, so the only hairstyle I can really wear is corn rows. I also try to keep it re-braided every two weeks. I also try to keep it moisturized every couple days. I stopped getting perms in October of 2012. I had the big chop February 2013. My hair is in between the 1.5 and two year length. My enlistment is up October 2016. If I continue to keep it braided and moisturized and happiness a professional salonist work with it every two weeks or so… How long do you think it’ll be by them?

Thank you so much! I enjoy you video. So inspiring!

  36. During your first years, how did you preparing your hair for sleeping? Because I did the Big Chop five month ago, but I don’t really know how to deal with my hair when I’m about to sleep. Sometime I make some banty knot. And what was your regimen during your first year? Did you wear wash and go everyday? What were your conditionner? And Did you wet your hair everyday too? Sorry for all my questions but your hair evolution is fabulous. Thank you for sharing your experience and excuse me for all the mistakes .. I’m french ! Lol

  37. I’m looking at your pictures at about year 1-11/2 and my hair looks a lot like that (size wise). However, it seems like all I can achieve is an Afro or twist outs. My wash and go’s always turn out looking like an Afro as well. I can’t seem to get the defined curls I’m hoping for. Right now I cover my hair a lot with braids and weave on, i would really love to carry my hair.Help????

  38. Hi Alicia!
My Names Shacree & I absolutely love your hair! I’m definitely a weave girl and just barley decided to go natural! I would take my weave out put it back in take it out put it back in and it ended up thinning and breaking off my edges. I’m working on growing them back out and letting my hair finally breathe! In your opinion, what’s the best low maintenance natural styles for trying to let your hair grow out? My hair is fine but extremely thick and Im addicted to putting heat on it lol! I’ve been researching a lot and I just want the healthiest way for it to grow longer and thicker for summer. I don’t have a problem with hair growth, Im just trying to ding the best ways to keep it healthy while natural!
Thank you so much for your time! Anything helps!

  39. I usually keep my end sealed .ends are the driest and ooldest part of The hair some time soon it’s better to stay from using heat styling for a while

  40. So question….

I’ve had my hair in dreadlocks for the last 4.5 years (boy I miss my locks) anyhow it took me about 2-3 months to pull them out as they were very tiny. So I’ve now combed them out. I went to the hairdressers and she trimmed my hair and hot ironed it. Charged me wayyy too much lol. Anyhow I decided to try and stick with my hair being out and see how it goes instead of relocating it. I love my natural hair so it’s not a big issue for me but I decided I would like to grow it some more. I’ve read through ur post and you never once mention trimming your ends… do you trim them or no?

  41. I’ve had my natural hair for about two and a half years. I stretched my hair for christmas and was told it would return within. 2 weeks and it has been five months since but my full hair hasn’t returned to it’s kinky , curly and natural state.I have only got undergrowth, nothing else.
What do you think I Can do?
