I always get questions about how I am able to make my two strand twist last, and what are some things I do to care for my hair while wearing them. I decided to do a blog that covered as much as possible. This information can also be used for twist or braids with extensions. 🙂
There was a time during my journey when I could wear my twist for four even five weeks. Now, that I am further in my journey, I get bored really easy so it just doesn’t work! LOL! I wore them so much in 2011 I just became a little tired of them. Don’t get me wrong, I still love them, but I am experimenting more with my loose hair this year.
It is very important that I twist securely at the roots. If I don’t, my roots will start to get puffy in the first week. I usually apply a leave in or gel to the ends of my twist to help keep them from unraveling. To maintain my hair at night I have more than one method I use. It really depends on what you want your twist to look like.
**Maintaing My Twist At Night**
These are also methods that can be used to keep twist stretched!
Wrapping Method: I wrap my twist around my head to keep them stretched out, and tie down with a satin scarf.
Bunning Method: This is when I put the twist into one ponytail. I twist the ponytail around similar to the method used for bantu knots and bun the hair up.
Pineapple Method: A high ponytail that sits on the top of the head. The hair falls down sort of like a pineapple. LOL!
**Moisturizing and Sealing**
- Week 1 my twist look almost perfect. I don’t apply any water or oil to my hair, because it is usually freshly washed, deep conditioned, and moisturized. By week 2: My twist are starting to get frizzy, My ends are curling a little more, I have shrinkage, and I have to moisturize and seal the ends every 2-3 days.
I spritz a little water on the ends, and I seal with oil or a leave in. The important thing is making sure to wrap or bun the hair up, so that it doesn’t shrink because of the water or moisture you added. I let it dry overnight and then take them down. Note: Make sure to only use a small amount of water. I also massage my scalp with oil throughout the week as needed, if I feel it is getting a little dry and itchy.
**Working Out and Maintaining Twist:**
- I do workout during the week. On average it can be 5 days a week. My scalp doesn’t get irritated easily, so it has never been a big problem for me. If your scalp gets irritated you may not be able to wear the style as long which is understandable. I massage the scalp with oil to keep the scalp from getting dry and irritated. I workout with my hair in one of my night time maintenance styles. This way my hair isn’t being thrown around and shrinking up. Once I have my shower and the hair has had a little time to dry from the workout, I take it down. Not everyone can do this…it really depends on how much you sweat, and the way your hair smells afterwards.
**Washing My Twist**
- I don’t wash my hair while wearing small two strand twist. My hair gets really tangled, and I have many knots. There are some people who are able to do it, but my hair just doesn’t like it. I’ve tried many methods. My hair is really tightly coiled and when it gets wet while I am wearing twist, the hair sticks together. When it is time to take the twist down my hair is in big balls of knots and glued together hair. #horrible
